Sheep are used as a metaphor all throughout the Bible. Sheep are highly social animals and their natural instincts to flock together for safety, stick together as family in maternal groups, and follow someone they trust can reflect some of our natural instincts. The metaphor of a shepherd leading his sheep to pasture, protecting the flock, and caring for each individual sheep all paint the picture of how our Great Shepherd, Jesus, cares for us.
“My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me.” John 10:27
