With a trip planned for the Scottish Highlands to visit the homeland of the “Montgomery Clan”, we figured a Highland Cow design, or a “heilan coo”, would be a bonnie (beautiful) fit for this year. If ya dinna kin (don’t know), these hardy cows are one the oldest cattle breeds in the world dating back to the 6th century and, aye (yes), despite their muckle (massive) horns are one of the friendliest cattle breeds too!

Temple Grandin is one of our favorite people to listen to when we visit The Homestead Festival each June and she was instrumental in creating humane systems for working with cattle herds. While spending time as a teenager on her aunt’s cattle ranch she invented her “squeeze machine” for calming cattle, now known as a center track restrainer system. A family cow is very important on any homestead and learning from someone like Temple can be a game changer.
